3D Printing Molybdenum Base Alloy

Issuing time:2023-07-14 15:57

Molybdenum based alloy is an alloy with refractory metal molybdenum (MO) as the main raw material and nickel (Ni), iron (FE), copper (Cu) and other metal elements as auxiliary materials. Due to its good thermal, mechanical, electrical and chemical properties, it is widely used in military, national defense, aerospace, aviation, medical, new energy and nuclear power fields. However, due to the simple shape, structure and general quality, the application of molybdenum alloy produced by traditional production process is limited in many fields. In order to solve the above problems, the researchers used 3D printing technology to produce the alloy parts

3D printing technology, also known as additive manufacturing technology, is a rapid prototyping technology. It is a technology based on digital model files, using powder metal and other bindable materials to construct objects by printing layer by layer. Generally speaking, molybdenum alloy additive manufacturing processes include laser process and electron beam process.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is a technology that uses metal powder to be completely melted under the heat of laser beam and then cooled and solidified. Electron beam melting (EBM) is a process that melts the metal powder layer through the electron beam in the high vacuum to produce products. Compared with the former, the latter is more suitable for the production of molybdenum based alloys, mainly due to its better control of temperature changes in the printing process, so it is easier to produce products with complex shapes and high quality.

Compared with the traditional production process, 3D printing technology can produce products with richer shapes and higher qualification rate, but if it is operated improperly, it will also lead to the defects of pores and cracks in the produced molybdenum based alloy, which will affect the performance of the product. In addition, 3D printing technology also has high requirements for molybdenum alloy raw materials, such as low impurity content, spherical powder shape, moderate powder particle size and particle size distribution, so as to make the whole production process more smooth, that is, it is not easy to bridge; And the comprehensive performance of the product is better, which is mainly reflected in the high purity, density and uniformity of the alloy.

Molybdenum based alloys produced by additive manufacturing technology can be used as high temperature resistant parts of nuclear reactors and aerospace equipment, or artificial joints.
